‘It’s addictive’ – New Yorkers weigh in on social media

The BBC asked New Yorkers about their thoughts on social media addiction. Tuesday, 18 August, marked the first day of a trial brought by US states against social media giant Meta over claims it deliberately designed its platforms to be addictive to young people. A lawyer for California tells the court Meta’s business model aims to “Hook the users; hold them for as long as they can; harvest their data; (and) hide the truth from the public”. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, says it “strongly disagrees” with the allegations.
