A Berkshire hospice took centre stage in hit show Ted Lasso after an unused wing was transformed into a film set.

Thames Hospice’s Otter Wing in Maidenhead was used by the cast and crew of the Emmy-winning programme, which follows the fortunes of the fictional AFC Richmond, when filming took place last September.

Chief executive Rachael de Caux said hiring out the space is an important revenue stream for the hospice, which needs £44,000 a day to provide its services.

She said everyone involved in filming the show’s fourth season was “very humble, down to earth, [with] absolutely no diva-like behaviour at all”.

She added: “It was exciting and it also means that the hospice is a living, breathing place. It’s a happy place where sad things happen but actually life does go on through it.

“[The cast and crew] were very professional, very considerate. We’re able to isolate the wing they were using so there was very little impact to the rest of our staff and users.”

She said parts of the wing were temporarily transformed by the show’s production crew.

“It’s really odd when you’re so used to what your ward looks like and the amazing crew come in and dress it in a day and a half. So even though you know you’re in your own clinical space, it’s unrecognisable,” de Caux added.

The hospice said it has plans to reuse the Otter Wing for clinical use, with more details expected to be released later this year.

A small elephant sculpture was painted in AFC Richmond’s blue and red and signed by the show’s stars including Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham during filming.

It will be auctioned off alongside other items in October as part of the hospice’s Trunks Across the Thames appeal.

Thirty elephant sculptures will remain in place across Windsor and Slough until 13 September and will then be sold off to raise funds the following month.
