British singer Kyla’s Do You Mind has been named as TikTok’s song of the summer in the UK after the noughties garage track experienced a resurgence on the app.

The song gained popularity when it was first released in 2008, but it became known worldwide in 2016 when Canadian rapper Drake sampled it on his chart-topping single One Dance.

It has now found a new audience by trending on TikTok, generating more than 500 million views from about 650,000 videos posted in the UK over the summer, according to the platform.

Kyla, who created the song with her husband DJ Paleface, tells BBC Newsbeat it is “surreal” but “incredible” that Do You Mind is getting another moment nearly 20 years on.

“Back in 2016, even though it had all that success, it still felt like: ‘Oh, it’s because you’re with Drake’,” she says.

“So you don’t always feel validated.

“I think this time around it was like: ‘Well this is actually me’.”

Singer Jorja Smith brought Kyla out on stage during her headline slot at All Points East festival in London last month to perform the track together.

Kyla says hearing about 40,000 people sing the song back to her was an “incredible” experience which made her want to cry.

“It feels nice because it’s mine. I’m happy,” she says.

The song has soundtracked a range of TikTok videos, from lip-syncs to outfit reveals.

But Kyla says she personally loves the ones which play on the lyrics “baby” and “honey” by using dolls and real honey as props.

UK garage music is experiencing a resurgence, with artists like Sammy Virji, AJ Tracey and Disclosure incorporating the sound into their work, while noughties girl group Mis-Teeq are reuniting.

As part of the garage movement, Manchester-based artist Silva Bumpa’s On 2nite has taken third place in the latest TikTok chart, and Prospa and Cloonee’s Free Your Mind has made it to number seven.

“I feel like a lot of people are saying funky house is back, then I’m hearing garage is back, but I do think it’s a collection of people’s tunes that they’ve really loved over time and they’re just enjoying them again,” Kyla says about the revival.

“The younger generation are just learning these songs but they’ve been there for time.”

Do You Mind is not the only older song the platform has introduced to new audiences through trends this summer.

Oasis’ 1995 classic Wonderwall has secured the title of second biggest UK song of the summer on TikTok after becoming the unofficial soundtrack to England’s World Cup journey.

Its popularity in mass singalongs for fans prompted a 6,800% surge in searches for it since the start of the tournament, according to Tiktok.

The track also featured in more than 300,000 videos and climbed back up the singles chart to number two.

The continued love for the Britpop band also helped their track Champagne Supernova make it to number six in the TikTok top 10 list.

The trend for nostalgic tracks appears to have been worldwide as US singer Katy Perry’s The One That Got Away has been crowned TikTok’s global song of the summer nearly 15 years after it was first released in 2011.

It has featured in more than 15 million TikTok videos, with Perry saying it is “surreal” to see the track “having this moment all these years later”.

“From seeing it being chosen in the ‘choose your own adventure’ section of my Lifetimes Tour concert film to seeing people discover it on TikTok and make it part of their own stories has been really special to watch,” she says.

“It’s nice to revisit an amazing chapter while watching another unfold.”
