Former West Brom midfielder Quevin Castro has died at the age of 25 after collapsing during a match in Portugal.

Castro fell to the ground during the first half of third-tier Real Sport Clube’s friendly against top-flight side Estrela de Amadora at the Estadio das Seixas in Lisbon on Saturday.

The Lisbon Football Association (AFL) said that Castro “passed away this morning during the pre-season friendly”.

Real Sport Clube said the midfielder was a “beloved member of our sporting family”.

“Quevin Castro was much more than just a player; he was an integral part of our family, leaving an indelible mark on all those who knew him.”

Castro joined West Brom in 2021 and made his debut for the club against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

His second appearance for the club came against Swansea later that season, before joining Burton Albion on loan.

West Brom said they were “devastated” by the news of Castro’s death and will pay tribute to the midfielder with a period of applause in the 25th minute of their Championship fixture against Burnley on Sunday, as well as wearing black armbands.

The former Sporting Clube academy product appeared for several sides in England – including Cambridge City, York City and Notts County – before returning to Portugal last summer.
