Republican Byron Donalds and Democrat David Jolly are projected to win Florida’s gubernatorial primaries, according to US media, setting up a heated race in November.

Votes are still being counted in the race to replace Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, whose term is up.

Florida, the US’s third-largest state by population, also held primaries for US Senate and US House of Representatives – with US media projecting that Republican Ryan Elijah will win his party’s House primary, beating out incumbent Cory Mills.

Primary races are also under way in Alaska and Wyoming ahead of November’s midterm elections, which will decide which political party controls the US Congress.

Florida features several must-watch races

With about 89% of the votes already in, CNN and The Associated Press project Republican Byron Donalds and Democrat David Jolly will win their respective party primaries, meaning they will face off in the general election in November.

Congressman Donalds received President Donald Trump’s endorsement for governor, but a right-wing candidate James Fishback generated attention with young conservative voters for his controversial statements and social-media heavy strategy.

Democrats have not held the Florida governor’s mansion since 1999.

Jolly, a former Republican congressman who left the party and became a critic of Trump, faced off against an array of candidates to score the projected win for his party’s primary. That included state lawmaker Dotie Joseph and criminal justice reform advocate Evelyn Castillo-Bach.

In the Senate race, Ashley Moody, a Republican, is running for her first full term after being appointed to replace Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The Democratic Senate primary has shaped up to be another contest between progressive and moderate Democrats.

State Representative Angie Nixon has carved out the progressive lane, while Alex Vindman, who testified in Trump’s first impeachment in 2019 and was subsequently fired by the White House, has fashioned himself as a more moderate candidate.

With more than 90% of votes in, US media is projecting Republican Ryan Elijah to win his party’s primary for Florida’s 7th congressional House district.

Elijah is projected to beat out incumbent Republican Congressman Cory Mills, in perhaps the most closely watched congressional race in Florida. Mills has been running for reelection as he faces an investigation by the House Ethics Committee and allegations of domestic abuse.

Mills has denied any accusations of misconduct. But DeSantis has distanced himself from Mills, saying he would not endorse him.

In Alaska, it is Dan Sullivan vs Dan Sullivan

On the opposite end of the country, in the state of Alaska, Republicans closely watched incumbent US Senator Dan Sullivan’s performance, after a little-known challenger with the same name entered the race.

Despite legal efforts to kick the second Dan Sullivan off the ballot, he will appear alongside the sitting senator who bears his name.

Their names were distinguished on the ballot, with Senator Dan Sullivan marked as an incumbent and his doppelganger was listed as “Daniel J Sullivan, Jr”. But in a state with a relatively small voting population, even siphoning off a small number of votes could have an impact.

The top four vote-getters advance to the general election in Alaska, regardless of party affiliation. Democrats hope their candidate, Rep Mary Peltola, can help them flip the seat and recapture the US Senate in November.

Republicans hope to lock in Wyoming wins

In Wyoming, Republican Governor Mark Gordon is term limited. The Republican primary will function as a preview of the general election in the deep red state.

Three candidates – Megan Degenfelder, Eric Barlow, and Brent Bien – are vying to replace Gordon. Democrat Kenneth Casner is running unopposed.

Wyoming voters must also also choose a new US Senator after Cynthia Lummis planned to retire. Trump has endorsed Rep Harriet Hageman, a Republican congresswoman, for the seat.
